UMURANGI x YRN - WAKA
This piece depicts rowers in a Waka, a type of canoe that is prevalent in the history of māori and many other people of the pacific. In the history of the pacific and its people, we were explorers who ventured further into a great unknown.
My intention with this piece was to represent the perseverance and endurance of māori through our hardships, and that even if the Sky is Red, and we are faced with [REDACTED], that we will continue to simply be.
UMURANGI x YRN - TŪPUNA
In te reo māori, Tūpuna is a word that refers to ancestors or forebears. Within some philosophies among māori, people, environment, and things can often be understood in relation to what came before them, and that in some ways, represent a current embodiment of what or who has come before.
With this dialectical view in mind, I chose to represent this through the 2 colours that make up the halves of a whole.
